Why Porto

The case for Porto

Porto is smaller than Lisbon but arguably more charming. The city's Ribeira waterfront — a UNESCO-listed tangle of narrow streets and painted tile houses overlooking the Douro River — is one of the most photogenic urban areas in Europe. Across the iconic Dom Luís I bridge, Vila Nova de Gaia is home to the great Port wine lodges (Graham's, Taylor's, Sandeman) where groups can do guided tours and tastings.

The nightlife is centred on Rua Galeria de Paris — Porto's bar street, where venues open onto the pavement at night and bar-hopping on foot is easy. The city also has several good clubs, though the clubbing scene is less developed than Lisbon's. Porto is the right choice for groups who want food, wine and culture alongside a good night out.

Practical Info

Getting there & practical tips

✈️ Flights: EasyJet, Ryanair and TAP Air Portugal all operate direct flights to Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport from London. Journey time approximately 2 hours 10 minutes. Return fares typically £70–180 pp.

🌡️ Best months: May to September for guaranteed warm weather and outdoor terraces. October is excellent with warm days and fewer crowds. Porto receives more rain than Lisbon — particularly October to March.

⚠️ Group accommodation: Porto's central accommodation has limited large group villa options. Book 8–10 weeks ahead. The Cedofeita and Bonfim neighbourhoods are good alternatives to the tourist-heavy Ribeira.

⚠️ Steep streets: Porto is a hilly city. Wear comfortable shoes — there are cobblestone streets and significant elevation changes throughout the historic centre.
