Riga is one of Europe's most underrated stag destinations — cheap, architecturally stunning, with a nightlife scene that runs well past Western European closing times. A 3-night trip typically costs £200–320 per person excluding flights. The city has more Art Nouveau architecture than anywhere else in Europe and a vibrant bar and club scene centred on the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
The case for Riga
Riga combines two things rarely found together: a genuinely beautiful city and very cheap prices. The Old Town (Vecrīga) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobblestone streets, medieval guild houses and Gothic church spires. The Art Nouveau district — the largest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in the world — is architecturally extraordinary.
Prices are significantly lower than Western Europe. A pint costs £2.50–4.00, club entry is typically £5–15, and group accommodation is very affordable. For groups wanting Eastern European value with an architecturally impressive city, Riga is an excellent choice.

Latvian Black Balsam Tasting
Rīgas Melnais Balzāms — Black Balsam — is a bitter herbal liqueur produced since 1752. Try it neat, with blackcurrant juice, or in a cocktail. Mandatory in every Riga bar. Around £2–4 per shot.
Riga Old Town Walk
The Old Town is free to explore — medieval stone lanes, 13th-century Riga Cathedral, the Three Brothers medieval townhouses, and the Freedom Monument. Best in the morning after arrival.
Art Nouveau District Walk
Walk through the Quiet Centre to see the world's highest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings. A free self-guided walk using an online map takes 1.5 hours. Genuinely stunning architecture.
Jūrmala Beach Day Trip
Baltic seaside resort 30 minutes from Riga by train (£3 return). Long white sand beach and a local bar and restaurant scene. Best June–August.

Well-equipped ranges accessible by taxi. Supervised sessions with various weapons. Budget £35–55 pp. Consistently popular with stag groups.
Latvian Sauna Experience
Traditional pirts (steam bath) sessions are a genuine Latvian cultural tradition. Group sauna bookings at city-centre facilities. Budget £25–40 pp for 2 hours with birch branch whisking.

✈️ Flights: Air Baltic, Ryanair and Wizz Air operate direct flights to Riga Airport from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton. Journey time approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. Return fares typically £70–160 pp.
💱 Currency: Latvia uses the Euro since joining the Eurozone in 2014. Very affordable — roughly 35–40% cheaper than Western Europe.
⚠️ Weather: Riga is in Northern Europe. Evenings can be cool even in summer. Bring layers. Winter trips are cold and dark but Riga's Christmas market in December is one of Europe's best.
⚠️ Old Town tourist bars: Some bars around the main square charge tourist prices. Walk to Bergs area or Lāčplēša Street for better-value local venues.
